Notable Owners Д¬ordell's Maztican fleet had several caravels. Christopher Columbus' three ships, the 'Nina', 'Pinta', and 'Santa Maria', were all caravels. Caravels were commonly used by the Spanish and the Portuguese for both commerce and exploration. Though often used as a warship, the caravel could also carry just over 100 metric tons of cargo. ДЄ typical caravel took three months to build within a small shipyard. The caravel was a small sailing ship with three or four masts, a broad bow, and a high, narrow stern. Their sailing speeds were three miles per hour in light winds. Д¬aravels were seaworthy and capable of deep sea voyages. On the Inner Sea, the sails were usually square, but in Amn, caravels had triangular lateen sails which allowed the ship to tack into the wind. A caravel could be armed with a large weapon (such as a catapult or ballista) but was not built to wield a ram.

It could bear a load of 120 tons of cargo. Д¬rew size ranged from a minimum of seven to fifteen and could carry up to a maximum of 30 to 50, including passengers. The ship had a smooth hull, which was constructed around a strong internal framework.
